Photography and Literacy (PAL) Project

Would you like to share your creativity through photography?

Have you ever considered telling stories through pictures?

The PAL Project takes place across two 10-week semesters. The scope and sequence of the semesters are designed to take students through an inquiry-based educational photography & literacy journey, where students develop writing & visual skills through technical photography. The experience will incorporate their creative expressions of their cultural experience with foodways and will result in the publication of a cookbook filled with entries (photos, recipes and stories) from the students.

Program Management
At the forefront of our mission is to provide a healthy, safe and secure environment that encourages learning through action, inquiry and exploration around the theme of photography and literacy. Most importantly promoting a good self image in each child by producing an environment that encourages independence, decision making, problem solving and morality.

The PAL Project is managed in coordination between the SU Program Coordinator and Program Director at Mercy Works. The Program Coordinator handles all aspects of teaching, including lesson delivery, recruiting undergraduate and graduate assistants, and getting university students’ clearances to work with minors. Mercy Works is responsible for all aspects relating to facilities including making the space available for instruction, as well as recruiting student participation.

In this environment youth are guided through the process of developing a vision for their lives while they pursue their interests in photography, editing and writing opportunities that can lead to careers in journalism, editing and photography.
